The Two-Bounce Rule in pickleball, also known as the Double Bounce Rule, requires that both the serve and the return of serve must bounce once on each side of the net before players are allowed to hit the ball in the air (volley). Specifically, after the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce once before returning it. Then, the serving team must let the returned ball bounce once before they can hit it back.

Why the ‘Double Bounce Rule’ Became the ‘Two-Bounce Rule’ in Pickleball

The “Double Bounce Rule” in pickleball was officially renamed the “Two-Bounce Rule” in 2018 by USA Pickleball. This change was made to improve clarity and reduce confusion, particularly for new players who might misinterpret the term “double bounce” as referring to two bounces on the same side, which is actually a fault in the game. The name “Two-Bounce Rule” more accurately reflects the requirement that both the serve and the return must bounce once before any volleys (hitting the ball out of the air) can occur.

This rule is fundamental to pickleball, as it prevents the serving team from gaining an immediate advantage by charging the net after a serve, thereby encouraging longer rallies and a more strategic game.

  1. Ball is served
  2. Receiving team must let ball bounce before returning.
  3. Serving team must let ball bounce before returning
  4. Ball has bounced on either side, players on either team are now free to volley or groundstroke until the point is won.

Of a ball hits the net goes over and bounces on the frame of opposing players and then bounces on the floor….is that considered 3 bounces or 2?
Thx

Playing the other day and the second bounce landed in the NVZ. I was then told that the 2nd bounce and of course the serve could not bounce in the kitchen.
I’ve seen that the lob is the better shot off the serve, makes since but we aren’t pros so a pour RETURN second hit might hit inside the kitchen. Legal or not , point or no point

I have witnessed the serve skids, and the returner cannot return the ball. It does not bounce. What’s the rule for that one
